English over

Yea, so I'm almost done the term, which includes this mentally taxing English based elective course. As a last project I did up this digital painting from a scene in "the Story of An Hour". I had to describe the characterization of Louise Mallard, the protagonist, through graphic novel format. I'm not very fond of the story, but I still I wanted to do a good job on the picture. To that end I'd like to think I did what I set out to.

More Boards

OK so this is the new story, which by dec 17 will be an actual factual leica reel, my technical first : 0 Aside from a few changes to help pacing, I'm generally done with the drawing stage so I figured I'd post the finished boards. More stuff to come before the end of the week!

Epressions

Latest project in character design. I learned a lot about line art and construction and blah blah blah. I really shouldn't pass it off though, I definitely gained a level of control over my art with this one <3 I haven't grown into this knowledge yet, but I was able to pull this off with relative quickness. Enjoy!

Sketchbook completion

So a week and a half ago I finished the sketchbook i started at thanksgiving (Canadian thanksgiving) and I've been committed to posting a few pages. It's been a hassle to get it all ready though. Anywho, here's what was up around october, there's a few pages of process so please try to see past the rough/sloppy execution. Todd White (Spongebob character designer) came to the school around then and is one of the caricatures btw, it was a pretty cool interview held by Nancy Beiman. I'm happy I had the chance to go, it was fun.

Fanart

Yea, so I met a really talented and awesome first year in my program and we immediately decided to do an art trade. One piece is the subject matter and for her, Luffy is the subject (I'm getting a picture of Boa Hancock, when I get it, I'll be sure to post it along with info on this artist) Anyways here's a sketch I did up this morning; tried to colour it today buut it wasn't turning out all that great and between class and crap weather, it was easier just to cop out and post a scan. I should draw stuff like this more often I thin! It was pretty fun to make fun after all : >

Part 2 of Emslie

So I managed to convince Peter to caricature me one more time and this one is even funnier! He says the old one is better and its true, I definitely like it more, but this one has a silly charm. I think it's cute how sassy I apparently look ; D

Time lapse

So I've managed to finish an entire sketchbook since my last post, and at least one assignment per class. Of course that doesn't really matter if I haven't had the chance to scan anything, so I'll be spending the better part of today getting stuff ready to post.

First up is the next painting assignment. I wanted to make a cathedral but I totally bit off more than I could chew, and under some pretty hefty time constraints this is what I was able to come up with : S Hopefully I'll have better luck next time.

Storyboard finals, finally

So the project is done and this is the result. Holy crap was that long, but pretty rewarding. I like boarding, and I like my story, but I took too long and the quality isn't as great as it ought to be for the time spent. 'Took too long' is getting to be an issue, so my new focus is getting faster at arting while preserving a consistent quality.

Oh, I also want to take my blog into a less sterile direction. Instead of only posting practice and homework, I'm going to start showing off personal pieces around here, starting with a banner hopefully, and maybe more fanart ( like the bad girl and gaga pictures from awhile ago) For whenever I get around to doing that, any critique is more than welcome, encouraged even!

revised since I missed a board during scanning.

Work dump

: p obligatory crap of the week, not my fav stuff but done efficiently. Not entirely fair, I like my action pose sheet of the cyclops throwing the ship, and the painting could've gone far worse.. if my last year marks were any indication. I don't hate the skeleton from our rom trip either really. Anywhoo, still my boards to do, I tried to leave the most time for those so we'll see if I can't impress myself this week.

Story beats

Finally I get to post these! What a change after just one week; my roughs comparatively looked like crap. The pitch also went pretty nicely, I was told that I don't need frame 2 from the father beats but otherwise it was great. Part 3 of the project: turn one of the stories into a 16 frame minimum board.... considering that the 8 I did with character lineups took me a day or so to do, I expect this coming week to be pretty crammed with boarding >__>     ..I mean 'yay more boarding!'

First tonals

These are my tonal studies for my first painting project, mm first tonal studies at least; I'd do some in gouache but the closest source of Acryla gouache is too far to get to during business hours at the moment : /

Got my beats finished and pitched today as well, which is actually the bigger news but since I don't have them scanned nicely, I think I'll downplay that for the time being.

In other news I saw splice tonight, it ws weird but sorta cool ( sorta creepy too ) dunno what to think of it just yet, but it was definitely worth mention on my blog (not to say inception, scotty p, and kickass all didn't... I'm just forgetful)

Story beat roughs

Story beats based on a poem given to us in storyboarding class, these are just the roughs though; next week comes the real deal. This year I have Nancy Beiman, and while it's too early to set my expectations for the class, from what I've seen it'll be a great learning experience and improve my staging quite a bit. For now, this is what I could come up with.

Family dinner

Went to a family dinner and had a decent enough time, I got a couple drawings (literally 2 and some thumbnails) in and I thought I should throw em up. Didn't get the chance to finish much of my work though : / This coming week will be a bit of a hassle for it buuuuut I can take it!

Red Mist

Me and some friends from school watched Kickass a few nights ago, and one of my senior buddies asked me for a drawing of Red Mist, an 'adorkable' antagonist from the film. So apparently after I gave it to her she coloured it, and just sent the finished version to me about 5 mins ago! So here's my first collab piece of the year, courtesy of the ever so awesome Leighanna Frostad, who's art can be seen here: http://infectedaxewound.blogspot.com/

I'm Back! (warning, tl;dr ahead)

Wooooooo first week of school is now over, and I'm officially a 2nd year in Sheridan's animation program! So, first on the agenda is updating this place, I haven't posted anything on here in ages and considering that this is pretty much my only online art hub, that's a problem. The new term looks promising, and I immediately felt a sense of artistic purpose return as the week went on; this hopefully means I'll be posting stuff more often : >

Until I come up with some scan-worthy art to show off, please enjoy these photos of my spankin' new desk. This particular desk belonged to my role model 2 years ago, I'm quite proud to have claimed it and then thrown as much crap as I could find onto it. Decorating is presently at: 60% completion!

Oh, the inspiration on my desk includes art from: Glen Keane, Annette Marnat, and Claire Wendling. From deviant art: Chib-bee, Crazydragon, Jubilations and Arnistotle. The toys are there just for fun, if you don't recognize one, feel free to ask.

PPL

A handful of the ppl I hang out with at school, including myself. If I'm up for it, I might do up another one with some more folks I like : >  I thought I'd try something new with this and I think it worked out pretty well. Hope you guys like it <3

included is: Chris Parks, Laura Sloan, Sasha Bobasha (can't spell her last name ehehe) Kim Luu, Al Jerek Torrijaz, Derek Ainsworth and the legs of Steven Tobiasz, all of whom have fantastic blogs that can prob be found through this one.... OH and a Thurman skull for completeness ;p

More sketches

From Today's trip to the orthodontist.

Bad Gurl

This was done quite awhile ago.. like, I was still in classes when I did this up. I figure I may as well post it since I'm trying to make my blog my main art hub. Just a bit of fanart from one of my favourite ever games: Bad girl from the eclectic No More Heroes.

Bad girl is a boss near the end of the game who disappears before we even find out her name! I think I like her because there's an amazing amount of characterization put into such a throwaway villain; even though there's 0 info on her, and her involvement in the plot is minuscule at best, the few scenes she was in made me feel as if I knew her inside out and wanting more.

Here's to the tertiary character, who on occasion,  can be the 'johnny Depp' of their media.

Stylin

Just a style test, total scrap. Was going to make it Envy Adams from Scott Pilgrim (read the books awhile ago, can't say the movie doesn't have me excited though) but it didn't make it far enough along, maybe I'll do that up later.
